This is a pastel painting about the white-tailed tropic bird. It lives pan-pacific and in Hawaii often nests in inaccessible cliffs walls in volcanic craters.
Here I have continued to add darker tones in the blue part by using an almost black color. In the areas of white fur I have added darker color where the shadows are. This is on a beige velour paper.
So now I have added a darker blue and pinks and yellows as I work on the fur.
This is on velour paper for pastel painting and I have started by using a light color of pastel to outline the main features of the cat. Then I started the background colors going from dark to light.

Reminds me of the Native American playing flute while we gazed upward and were transported to earlier times of his ancestors.
This painting is done on Pastelmat a type of paper made for pastels, the fuzziness of the flower comes through very well with this media, don’t you think? It was an entry in the Hawaii Nei Art Show in Hilo.
